What Is Horizon?
System capabilities are important especially when they need to be designed to be mobile and be operated in extreme and harsh environments.
We set out to build a system that can work within these environments while being mobile to showcase what is possible when working with Novatech.

The Challenge
Our goal was to build a system that is capable of withstanding extreme conditions using commercial parts (CoTS) to keep the cost as low as possible. For the system to be successful it needed to be able to be deployable in the quickest way possible, creating a simple, easy to use product.
We placed strict limitations on the physical space and overall weight to emulate the needs of current market. Due to this we were limited to what high performance GPU and CPU compute platforms could be used within the system

Designing a solution that will stop the product sliding across a flat surface.
Incorporating any required I/O ports not only for peripherals that may be needed to connect directly to this station but to link this to another such product to share resources and build this into a larger multi-node system.
Retaining the IP rating of the case after its fully integrated.
Efficiently, providing the adequate power for such a system and all its peripherals whilst being confined to the size of the box.
Engineering unique cooling solutions to overcome the thermal challenges from high powered compute devices and associated power supplies.
How do we do it
Being a leading UK supplier of IT equipment for over 38 years we have great experience in sourcing parts and dedicated teams that maintain relationships with vendors across the world. Selecting the best parts to meet the design criteria sets the foundation to build from.
We design and model ideas in 3D using the latest CAD software, allowing us to engineer solutions for custom plastics, metals and other substrates to install the components. From there we build the entire system into a 3D model. Along with this cable diagrams and wiring diagrams are produced, custom label tags can also be included if necessary.
Once the design work is completed, we move onto the prototyping phase, this is the first step into making the design idea a reality. Parts start to be produced, during this process designs may be altered to make sure the physical implantation is not only working but working as well as it possibly can.

Testing
Working with leading UKAS accredited test facilities we can test and certify products to any required, appropriate standard(s). examples of previous units include but are not limited to the below:
Vibration Test, transportation by wheeled vehicles equivalent to 5000 km on-road, transportation by sea Equivalent to 3 months at sea, transportation by jet aircraft equivalent to 100 hours of flight time.
Shock test, up to 30g
Drop, Topple and Roll Test.
Corrosive atmospheres, 3 cycles, maintaining saltwater spray for 2 hours, Store at +40°C (±2°C), 93% RH (+2%/-3% RH), for 22 hours. Repeat for 3 Cycles.
EMC Testing.
LVD Electrical safety testing.
Final Production
Once the prototype is fully tested and signed off, we move on to production. Working with our highly skilled and experienced engineers, technicians and system builders we can build a ruggedised and effective system build entirely from CoTS parts in a portable size.
